How long does it take to adjust to dentures?

Adapting to new dentures is different for everyone. Most people require about 30 days to become reasonably comfortable with their dentures, though it may take a few months to adjust completely. During this period, your mouth adapts to having the appliance in place, and you develop new muscle memory for speaking and eating.

The First Week with Dentures

The initial days with new dentures often present the biggest challenges. You might experience:

  • Increased saliva production
  • Slight irritation or soreness in certain areas
  • Difficulty pronouncing certain words
  • Changes in how food tastes
  • Challenges with chewing

These experiences are completely normal and temporary. We'll see you for a follow-up appointment shortly after you receive your dentures to make any necessary adjustments and address pressure points that cause discomfort.

Tips for a Smoother Adjustment

The following strategies can help you adapt more quickly:

  • Start with softer foods cut into small pieces
  • Practice reading aloud to become comfortable speaking
  • Use a small amount of denture adhesive if recommended
  • Follow a consistent oral hygiene routine
