A DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) and a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) are essentially the same degree. Both dentists complete the same rigorous education, training, and licensing requirements. The difference is simply in the name each dental school chooses to award.
Why Do Two Different Titles Exist?
It comes down to tradition. Harvard Dental School introduced the DMD title back in 1867, while most other schools had already been using DDS. Despite the different initials, both programs require four years of dental school following undergraduate education, with coursework and hands-on clinical training covering everything from routine x-rays and fillings to crowns, extractions, and root canals. Graduates of both programs sit for the same national board exams before they're ever allowed to pick up a dental instrument.
Does It Affect the Quality of My Care?
Not one bit! Whether your dentist holds a DMD or DDS, they've passed the same national board exams and meet the same state licensing standards set by the Florida Board of Dentistry. Both titles represent years of hard work, dedication, and a genuine commitment to keeping your smile healthy. You're in equally great hands either way.
